Thousands of fans line the streets of Glasgow to pay final respects to Celtic legend Billy McNeill

Thousands of people turned out in Glasgow along with major figures of Scottish football to pay their final respects to Billy McNeill.

Crowds lined the streets for Celtic’s European Cup-winning captain as the funeral procession made its way from a city-centre church, past a packed George Square through the east end to Celtic Park.

Thousands of supporters lined the streets of Glasgow to pay their final respects

Supporters had gathered to say a final farewell, many throwing scarves and flowers and singing songs in tribute to a man who won 31 trophies as a player and manager of Celtic.

There were songs and tears at Parkhead as fans paid tribute during a particularly sad time for the club. McNeill’s death last week was soon followed by that of fellow Lisbon Lion Stevie Chalmers, the man who netted the winning goal in the final against Inter Milan in 1967. Both had been suffering from dementia.

The Archbishop of Glasgow paid a heartfelt eulogy to one of his personal heroes and McNeill’s son, Martyn, and broadcaster Archie MacPherson also delivered tributes at St Aloysius Church in Rose Street.

The surviving Lisbon Lions – Bertie Auld, Jim Craig, Bobby Lennox, John Clark and Australia-based Willie Wallace – were among the mourners along with other team-mates such as Sir Kenny Dalglish and former Celtic managers Martin O’Neill, Gordon Strachan and Brendan Rodgers.

Former Rangers players John Greig and Sir Alex Ferguson were there along with a number of players who played under McNeill, the likes of Murdo MacLeod, Frank McAvennie, Tommy Coyne and Frank McGarvey, while current Celtic boss Neil Lennon and his first-team squad arrived at the church.

Archbishop Philip Tartaglia offered sympathies to McNeill’s wife, Liz, and their five children and eight grandchildren, some of whom carried the coffin into church along with Lisbon Lions right-back Craig.

The archbishop described McNeill as a ‘captain of a team of legends’ and added: “As a 16-year-old boy, I watched with overflowing joy as Billy and his Lions lifted the European Cup. Never for a moment did I imagine that I would be conducting his funeral mass. I assure Liz and her family that it is a great honour for me to do so.

“Everyone remembers Billy holding up the European Cup in Lisbon. What a sight that was. His already imperious presence and stature was magnified by the achievement, by the accolade and by the context.

“Billy McNeill, the boy from Bellshill, Liz’s darling husband and father of their children, became public property. Beloved of the Celtic family, he was greatly appreciated also by the general Scottish public and by so many people across the world because he was the superb captain of the famous Lisbon Lions.”

Martyn McNeill described his parents as the “original Posh and Becks”, referencing his mother’s role as a dancer on television.

But he added: “We are not here to mourn the passing of a legend. We are here to say thank you for having so much more.”

MacPherson, a friend and long-time co-commentator of McNeill’s, recalled interviewing the former Aberdeen, Manchester City and Aston Villa boss at his home and being surprised to have to wait for him to find his football medals for a shot.

He added: “They were with the ladies I can see right here down the front when they were wee lassies. The medals, including that European one, they were using as currency to play shops with their next-door neighbours. I had visions of the European medal being exchanged for a couple of chocolate biscuits.

“It proved they were an ordinary family not carried away with the glory of their father and his reputation.

“So Liz, finally I would say to you, keep that tradition going. Let your grandchildren bring out the medals, and their grandchildren and then their grandchildren. Let them play with them, let them feel them, so that history isn’t shoved away in a wee cabinet.

“And if they do they will feel the reverberations of that famous day, when a Bellshill boy lifted the European Cup.”

And the Manchester United and England legend is desperate to land some big names for the club before their highly-anticipated debut.

According to Catalunya Radio, Beckham has tabled a four-year contract with a sizeable salary for Barcelona striker Suarez, asking him to join next year.

However, it is understood the Uruguayan has rejected the offer, as he intends to compete at the top level for a few more years.

Beckham, 44, insists he doesn’t want Inter Miami to become a retirement home for older players.

Stars from Europe often move to MLS at the tail-end of their careers – but Beckham wants high-quality individuals who are still hungry to win.

He told the Miami Herald: “We don’t just want players coming here at the end of their careers thinking, ‘Let’s go and have a couple of years in Miami and we’ll play a little bit of soccer’.

Tottenham legend Glenn Hoddle warns Spurs: New stadium won’t win matches for you

Glenn Hoddle insists Tottenham must not be distracted by their new stadium when it finally opens to host Crystal Palace on Wednesday night.

The grand opening comes amid the worst spell of Mauricio Pochettino’s reign, with Spurs winless in their last five league games and locked in a battle to qualify for next season’s Champions League.

While there may be a party atmosphere around their breathtaking £1billion arena on Wednesday night, Palace will be keen to spoil the fun and boot Spurs out of the top four.

And club legend Hoddle has warned the players to stay focused on their opponents rather than their glitzy new ground.

“The stadium is not going to do it for them and the fans are not going to do it for them,” the 61-year-old told talkSPORT.

“The players have got to really focus on playing for those three points tonight against a difficult Palace team.

“If they win they can start getting a bit of momentum and belief going into the City game, which would be fantastic.

“But they’ve got to do the business, the stadium won’t win the game for you. The players have got to go out and almost switch their minds off a little bit. You’ve got to keep your focus on your opponents.”

The Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, widely referred to as the new White Hart Lane, is the second largest club ground in England (behind Old Trafford) and boasts many revolutionary features.

And Hoddle can’t wait to see it.

“I’m so excited about the new stadium, it just looks incredible,” he added.

“It looks like an arena where the players will just be inspired.

“Whoever has built it, the architects, has really thought deeply about how it can impact the team. It’s very cleverly done.

Ruben Loftus-Cheek: Chelsea midfielder ‘facing year out with ruptured Achilles’ as Gareth Southgate confirms injury blow

Ruben Loftus-Cheek will reportedly miss up to a year of football after suffering a serious injury during Chelsea’s friendly with New England Revolution.

The Blues won 3-0 in the United States but Maurizio Sarri, the club’s manager, was dealt a huge blow when Loftus-Cheek went down injured, and was seen leaving the stadium on crutches and in a protective boot.

And, according to The Sun, the England midfielder faces a minimum six months on the sidelines, with a ruptured Achilles potentially keeping him out for a whole year.

This means Loftus-Cheek will miss the Europa League final, this summer’s Nations League finals, and the start of next season.

Gareth Southgate confirmed in a press conference today that Loftus-Cheek was going to be in his squad for next month’s Nations League finals, but he had to call-up a replacement after waking up and seeing the midfielder’s injury.

“We will find out more about a couple of players in that period and then I am going to have to make a couple of decisions,” said Southgate. “But we can change if we have injuries after that date. Frankly there is every chance that is going to happen.

“We have just got to make the best possible decisions really with the information that we have. It is constantly moving.

“I went to bed last night and Ruben is in the squad and playing brilliantly and now it is a huge disappointment for him. He misses now a major European final and a brilliant opportunity with us.

“In particular he has really come on in the last few months and looked strong and playing with a lot of confidence and I am really disappointed for him in particular.”

Southgate also claimed Callum Hudson-Odoi, Loftus-Cheek’s Chelsea team-mate, would have been in the England squad if he did not pick up a serious injury of his own during the final weeks of the Premier League season.

Chelsea’s medical staff are still assessing the extent of Loftus-Cheek’s injury and must decide whether the 23-year-old should undergo surgery.

Loftus-Cheek suffered the injury just after the hour mark, despite only being introduced as a half-time substitute.

He was replaced by the club’s Academy Player of the Year, Conor Gallagher.

Chelsea were in the US for a charity friendly as part of their Say No To Antisemitism campaign.

Prior to the fixture, Sarri lauded the trip’s purpose, but conceded that he felt his men needed to rest.

Nevertheless, the Italian fielded a strong starting XI at the Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Massachusetts, where owner Roman Abramovich was in attendance on Wednesday night.

Sarri made six changes at half-time, among them bringing on Loftus-Cheek in place of Mateo Kovacic.

A video has emerged of two supporters stopping alongside Hazard in traffic after Sunday’s 3-0 win over Watford – which secured Champions League qualification for next season.

Hazard’s laugh at the end suggests he was joking – and it’s unlikely this constitutes any serious hint about his future.

However, reports have emerged on Monday to suggest he is close to the exit door.

According to The Sun, Blues chiefs promised Hazard last summer that he would leave for La Liga with their blessing if he stayed for one more year.

And the player and his representatives have reportedly reminded Chelsea that he has honoured his side of their arrangement and urged the club to agree a fee for his transfer.

It is understood Madrid are willing to pay £90million but the Blues want more for Hazard, who has just one more year remaining on his contract.
