In the four years since Harry Kane made his England debut, he has become captain, won a World Cup Golden Boot and reached the semi-finals of football’s biggest tournament.
It was in a 4-0 Euro 2016 qualifying win against Lithuania on 27 March 2015 when he made his senior Three Lions bow, a game in which he also scored moments after coming on as a substitute.
The Tottenham striker, at the time of writing, is just eight England goals short of Alan Shearer’s haul of 30 and it is only a matter of time before he surpasses him and many fans will believe it won’t be long until he breaks Wayne Rooney’s record total of 53.

The England team has changed considerably since Kane’s debut and this is perhaps the most exciting England squad in a long time.
talkSPORT.com looks at the line-up back then and where those players are now.
Joe Hart (Burnley)
The former Manchester City goalkeeper’s fall from grace has been well documented. A poor showing at Euro 2016, Hart returned to City, only to discover he was not trusted by manager Pep Guardiola for a perceived inability to play from the back with his feet.
He was then sent on loan to Torino in Italy, but his performances were far from impressive. Spells with West Ham and Burnley followed and he has not featured for the Clarets since Boxing Day.
Nathaniel Clyne (on loan at Bournemouth)
After proving his capabilities at Southampton, the full-back earned a move to Liverpool and the following season he helped them reach the Europa League final.
A back injury prior to the 2017/18 season ruled him out for much of that campaign and he would make only three appearances.
After struggling to regain his place, he was loaned out to Bournemouth in January 2019, but Clyne has not played for England since 2016.
Gary Cahill (Chelsea)
The treatment of the Chelsea defender under Maurizio Sarri has been pretty wretched to say the least. Frozen out of the side, the Blues captain has not featured since December and has only played once as a substitute in the league.
He led Chelsea to FA Cup and Premier League success in the previous two seasons and played once at the 2018 World Cup.
Phil Jones (Manchester United)
A man of many facial expressions, Jones is still going strong at Manchester United and recently signed an improved contract to remain with the club until 2023.
Since 2015, he has won the FA Cup and the Europa League.
Leighton Baines (Everton)
The long-serving defender has found his role reduced in the Everton line-up under Marco Silva, with Lucas Digne taking his place.
Now in the twilight years of his career, the 34-year-old still remains a wonderful crosser and passer of a ball and the match against Lithuania in 2015 was his last in an England shirt.
Jordan Henderson (Liverpool)
Since the departure of Steven Gerrard, the former Sunderland midfielder has been appointed as Liverpool captain and this season has helped them get to within touching distance of winning a first Premier League title.
He is still a regular for England under Gareth Southgate.
Michael Carrick (Retired)
After 12 years at Manchester United, Carrick called time on his playing career at the end of 2017/18 season and is now a key part of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s backroom staff.
He won the last of his 34 caps for England in 2015 and described playing for the Three Lions as ‘almost depressing’ in an exclusive interview with talkSPORT.
Fabian Delph (Manchester City)
Having spent six years with Aston Villa, Delph joined Manchester City in July 2015. Although not a regular starter, he has proven to be a valuable and versatile member of Pep Guardiola’s side.
Delph earned himself a place in Southgate’s squad last summer and played twice in Russia.
Raheem Sterling (Manchester City)
Another player to have moved to the Etihad in 2015, Sterling won his first Premier League with the club last season.
Impressive this campaign, he has scored 19 goals and also found the net twice in the famous 3-2 win over Spain last October. Sterling actually opening his England account against Lithuania before Kane got his goal.
LATEST FOOTBALL NEWS
Wayne Rooney (DC United)
Now plying his trade in the USA with DC United, Rooney went on to become both England (53) and Manchester United’s (253) record goalscorer.
Having left Everton in 2004, he returned for a season in 2017 and added one final cap to his total, when he faced the United States in November to promote the Wayne Rooney Foundation.
In Kane’s debut game, Rooney opened the scoring after just six minutes.
Danny Welbeck (Arsenal)
The former Red Devils forward is now at Arsenal, but has had an unfortunate time with injuries.
Knee problems ruled him out for much of the 2015/16 season and he then suffered a groin injury last season.
Under Unai Emery, Welbeck has been restricted to just eight league matches after landing awkwardly on his ankle. He was the other scorer against Lithuania in 2015.
Substitutes
Ross Barkley for Henderson (71 minutes)
Now at Chelsea, Barkley has endured an indifferent spell at Stamford Bridge.
Falling out of favour with previous manager Antonio Conte, he returned fitter and leaner in the summer under Sarri and has played almost every game. He has shown glimpses of his talent, but is frustratingly inconsistent.
Kane for Rooney (72 minutes)
Since scoring in this game for England, the first of 20, Kane has gone on to win consecutive Premier League Golden Boot awards and was named England Player of the Year in both 2017 and 2018. His six goals at the World Cup meant he finished as top scorer despite losing to Croatia in the semi-finals.
Theo Walcott for Welbeck (77 minutes)
A 12-year stay at Arsenal came to end in 2018 and the England attacker moved to Everton.
Now 30, Walcott continues to fuel critics with his lack of end product and poor performances on Merseyside have yet to endear him to the Toffees faithful.
