Jordan Pickford still deserves to be England no.1 despite Everton mistakes, Ben Foster tells talkSPORT

Ben Foster believes Jordan Pickford still deserves his place as England number one despite his questionable form with Everton.

Pickford was the hero of England’s penalty shoot-out against Colombia at the World Cup and enjoyed a good overall tournament.

The Everton keeper has been responsible for more errors (four) leading directly to goals, though, than any other player in the Premier League this season.

Tom Heaton, meanwhile, has been in fine form for Burnley and has been pushing his rival all the way for that starting spot with some calling for the Everton man to be dropped.

Foster, who has eight England caps, feels any troubles Pickford may have at club level should not count towards national selection after what he has done for his country.

“Jordan for me is still number one just for what he has done with England in the past. If he is making mistakes for England then we can think about it,” Foster told talkSPORT.

“He was absolutely brilliant in the World Cup but it’s good we’ve got somebody like Tom Heaton pushing him.

“Tom has been probably been the standout English goalkeeper this season. When he came back you could see the turnaround in results straight away at Burnley.

“He’s a top-class goalkeeper and a top-class bloke and he’s always on top of his game.”

On the Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast, former Three Lions goalkeeper David Seaman also asked Foster about cliques within the national side where club mates only spend time with each other.

“It’s inevitable [there will be cliques]. When you go away you want to sit with your mates,” replied Foster.

“In all honesty, when you are going to work you are spending more time with your work mates than with your family so it is only natural you are going to want to sit with people you are comfortable with.

“It has never been a problem where it is divisive but it happens in most teams up and down the country.”
