Danny Murphy explains why Manchester United should consider dropping David de Gea and recalls when it happened to two Liverpool stars

Danny Murphy explains why Manchester United should consider dropping David de Gea and recalls when it happened to two Liverpool stars

Danny Murphy insists Manchester United goalkeeper David de Gea is not undroppable – and recalls when Steven Gerrard and Michael Owen suffered the same fate at Liverpool.

De Gea is widely considered the world’s best goalkeeper, but three huge mistakes in United’s last four games have raised serious questions about his place in the Red Devils’ starting XI.

Chelsea were the latest club to benefit when the Spaniard spilled at the feet of Marcos Alonso during Sunday’s 1-1 draw at Old Trafford.

The costly mistake, which follows high-profile errors against Barcelona and Manchester City, put a huge dent in United’s slim top-four hopes – and Murphy suggests it might be time to take De Gea out the firing line.

De Gea’s mistake proved costly

De Gea’s mistake proved costly

He told talkSPORT: “It was a really bad mistake; it changed the dynamic of the game and deflated Manchester United.

“It brings up a wider point: is any player undroppable? You should never ever be in a position where a player is undroppable.

“De Gea has a year left on his contract and we don’t know whether he wants to leave or whether he wants to stay.

“He needs to have a conversation with his manager. If he says, ‘I’m in, I’m close to signing, I want to be here’, then you leave him in.

“If he wants to leave, then maybe it’s time to take him out of the firing line.”

Murphy believes a ‘kick up the backside’ can have a positive effect on performance levels – just like it did when former Liverpool boss Gerard Houllier dropped Gerrard and Owen.

Murphy remembers when Owen and Gerrard were dropped at Liverpool

Murphy remembers when Owen and Gerrard were dropped at Liverpool

In their prime, the two former England stars were considered untouchable at Anfield, but neither were immune to the bench.

Murphy continued: “I remember Michael Owen being left out of the League Cup final. Robbie Fowler and Emile Heskey played up front.

“Michael was fuming and rightly so because he was the man at the time. He came back and ended up scoring two in the FA Cup final and one in the UEFA Cup final.

Cardiff boss Neil Warnock charged by FA for referee comments made on talkSPORT after Chelsea defeat

Cardiff boss Neil Warnock has been charged by the FA for his controversial comments about Premier League officials.

Referee Craig Pawson and his linesman failed to spot that Chelsea defender Cesar Azpilicueta was offside when he headed in a late equaliser before Ruben Loftus-Cheek netted a stoppage-time winner for a 2-1 victory in Wales last month.

Warnock called the officials ‘the worst in the world’ before giving another explosive interview to talkSPORT less than 24 hours later.

A 2-0 defeat at Manchester City followed for Cardiff, who are five points from safety with six games to go.

An FA statement said: “Neil Warnock has been charged with three breaches of FA Rule E3.

“It is alleged that comments he made in a post-match interview with the BBC, and a post-match interview with Sky Sports, following the Premier League game against Chelsea on 31 March 2019, were improper in that they questioned the integrity of the Match Official and/or implied bias.

“The Cardiff City manager has until 18:00 on 16 April 2019 to provide a response.”

Reports have claimed Warnock could step down as Cardiff manager regardless of which division they are in next season.

However, the 70-year-old insisted he owes it to the Bluebirds fans to stay on.

Neil Warnock was furious with the officiating in his side’s 2-1 defeat to Chelsea

He said: “I just feel as long as Vincent [Cardiff owner Vincent Tan] wants me to stay, no matter what division we are in, I think I owe it to the fans to stay.

“I changed my mind in the last couple of months with the Emiliano [Sala] tragedy. It brought a lot home. In the cold light of day, I don’t see anyone better to take over at this moment in time.

“Whereas if I can steady the ship next season, I will be in my final year at Christmas time, then I can help the club pick another manager.

“That’s what I would like to do, because the fans have been so good to me. I wouldn’t like to leave them in the lurch.

“I have never seen [my wife] Sharon enjoy a club like this. I’ve never heard fans chanting the name of a manager’s wife before.

The stalemate was enough, however, as Mansfield’s defeat at Oldham left the Stags nine points behind Danny Cowley’s team with just two matches remaining. The point also secured a play-off spot for Tranmere.

Mansfield lost 3-2 at Boundary Park, where Mohamed Maouche scored in between Gevaro Nepomuceno’s double for the Latics. Tyler Walker and Neal Bishop replied for the Stags, who twice found themselves two goals behind.

Bury moved above Mansfield into second place with a 3-1 home win against Northampton, who led through Andy Williams’ strike. Goals from Chris Stokes, Danny Mayor and Nicky Maynard completed the turnaround for the Shakers.

MK Dons, who host Mansfield in the final game of the season, missed the chance to move into the automatic promotion places after they had to settle for a 1-1 home draw with Port Vale. Kieran Agard saw a first-half penalty saved and Tom Conlon put Vale in front early in the second half. However, David Wheeler quickly equalised.

Forest Green also made sure of a play-off spot with a 2-1 home win against Cambridge. Gavin Gunning and Christian Doidge scored either side of Paul Lewis’ equalising goal for United.

Exeter stay in the final play-off place after coming from behind to draw 1-1 at Stevenage, who are one of the teams trying to chase them down. Kurtis Guthrie put Boro ahead but Ryan Bowman levelled things up before the break.

Colchester remain in the hunt for a top-seven spot despite drawing 1-1 at relegation fighting Yeovil. Jake Gray put the Glovers in front and the visitors then had goalkeeper Dillion Barnes sent off but managed an equaliser through Tom Eastman.

Joe Grayson’s injury time goal gave Grimsby a 1-0 win against Carlisle at Blundell Park while Morecambe were 4-0 winners against Cheltenham. Aaron Collins missed a 21st-minute penalty for the Shrimps but he made amends by completing the scoring late on after goals from Vadaine Oliver, Kevin Ellison and Sam Lavelle.

His two calamitous errors in the showpiece in Kiev ruined Jurgen Klopp’s chances of winning his first piece of silverware as Liverpool boss.

Klopp subsequently packed him off on a two-year loan to Beskitas, with few believing he will feature again for the Reds.

Despite that, he is understood to have been invited to attend the match against Spurs this weekend along with other players who have been out on loan.

But the Daily Mail claim Karius has decided to go on holiday rather than attend the showpiece at Atletico Madrid’s Wanda Metropolitano on Saturday evening.

Liverpool chiefs are said to be supportive of his decision to remain out of the limelight for the match.

Since his nightmare night in Kiev, things haven’t got much better for Karius.

He has made several high-profile errors in the Turkish Super Lig this term and Beskitas boss Senol Gunes recently had some harsh words for the glovesman.
