Liverpool vs Barcelona: Luis Suarez expects warm Anfield welcome and promises not to celebrate if he scores

Luis Suarez has vowed not to celebrate if he scores against Liverpool on Tuesday and believes a warm welcome awaits at Anfield.

The Barcelona striker scored 82 goals in 133 matches during his three-and-a-half-year stay on Merseyside, where he was loved by Reds fans and generally detested by all opposition supporters.

Much of that was of his own making, having been banned for eight matches after being found guilty of racially abusing Manchester United’s Patrice Evra and then 10 matches for biting Chelsea defender Branislav Ivanovic.

Suarez bit the hand that used to feed him after scoring the opening goal in the Champions League semi-final first-leg 3-0 win at the Nou Camp last week but he believes the reception he will receive on his return will be positive.

Suarez was, somewhat harshly, criticised for celebrating wildly when he scored the opening goal last week.

He will not be repeating those scenes should he find the net at Anfield.

“Celebrating the goal last week, people who know about football, who love this sport, know about the importance of this,” he said.

“I have all the respect in the world for the Liverpool fans. Because I scored and celebrated with my fans, I say sorry.

“Obviously it is clear that if I score a goal against Liverpool I won’t celebrate it in the same way.”

Suarez admits he owes a debt to Liverpool and thanks the club for making him the player he is today.

“It is special after enjoying a number of good years here and I am grateful to Liverpool for my time here and how they received me as player,” said the Uruguay international.

“I will always be thankful for that and the heritage of the club. It is going to be very special to come back here this time wearing a different shirt but I have lovely memories of my time here and my career at Liverpool.

“It helped me in so many ways, it helped me become more technical. When I came from Ajax I did improve but having players with great experience allowed me to be even better.

Suarez was once adored by Liverpool fans

“Being captain of Liverpool was one of the proudest moments of my career. It is something I won’t forget. Playing in the elite with Barcelona was because of Liverpool and what they made me.”

Suarez is convinced fans will remember his record at Liverpool and respect him accordingly.

“I was here for three-and-a-half years and the team had been four or five years without being in the Champions League. In the last year I was here we got in the Champions League,” added the 32-year-old, who revealed canteen staff at Liverpool’s Melwood training ground had given him presents for his three children.

“So I think people know the work I did here. I think there will be more applause than whistles. There may be quite a few who are not happy but I think there will be more who are happy and grateful.”

West Ham fans are ‘done’ with Marko Arnautovic, claims talkSPORT’s Adrian Durham

West Ham fans are “done” with Marko Arnautovic and should have sold him in January, according to talkSPORT’s Adrian Durham.

Arnautovic, 29, was desperate to force a big money move to China earlier this year but was unsuccessful in his attempts to do so.

Marko Arnautovic’s relationship with West Ham fans is at an all-time low

2

Marko Arnautovic’s relationship with West Ham fans is at an all-time low

He eventually signed a new contract at the London Stadium, but his relationship with Hammers fans has now turned sour with them bemused at how he handled the situation.

Making his first start for the club since January against Huddersfield last weekend, Arnautovic failed to endear himself to the home faithful producing a particularly poor display.

A chorus of boos and jeers from home fans came in the 67th minute when the Austrian striker was eventually substituted.

Speaking on Drivetime, Durham and co-host Darren Gough discussed the ongoing saga, with the former claiming the east London side should have sold the former Stoke striker in the last transfer window.

Durham said: “Ever since he said he wanted to go to China, the fans were done with him.

“When he said he wanted to go China to win things nobody really believed that, come on!

“What was even worse was when he stayed and signed a new contract, West Ham released a video on Twitter of him saying this and that.

“I thought blah, blah, again nobody believed a word of it.

“That was just a lame, PR exercise. West Ham fans aren’t gullible.

Dimitri Payet left West Ham on a sour note after previously being a fans favourite

2

Dimitri Payet left West Ham on a sour note after previously being a fans favourite

“His stock is low with supporters now and I’m not surprised whatsoever.”

Gough believes the Hammers now have another Dimitri Payet situation on their hands, with Arnautovic facing an uncertain future at the Premier League outfit.

Like Arnautovic, Payet was a firm fans favourite before an acrimonious falling out during his second season at the club.

That led to him eventually returning to his former side Marseille in January 2017 after submitting a transfer request.

And Gough believes the Hammers will fall on the wrong side of another transfer saga once the summer comes along.

“What they didn’t want was another Payet situation and that’s what they’ve got,” he explained.

“They should have let him go because he was desperate to go and still is.

“The reason West Ham stood firm is because they didn’t want people thinking these players can come and bully us again, especially after what happened with Payet.

“When you get a player who doesn’t want to be there you’re better off without them – especially someone like him who has history for this sort of thing.”

How a ‘Hard Brexit’ would affect the Premier League and it’s great news for Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur

How a ‘Hard Brexit’ would affect the Premier League and it’s great news for Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur

With the country locked in a Brexit crisis, the return of the Premier League this weekend could not have come at a more convenient time.

With Prime Minister Theresa May floundering and the Houses of Parliament in chaos, top-flight football will provide a welcome distraction.

But just imagine what the country would look like had Brexit taken full effect after the referendum in 2016.

Theresa May is somewhat clueless at this current moment in time

3

Theresa May is somewhat clueless at this current moment in time

Thanks to research conducted by Free Super Tips entitled ‘Brexit Effect’, Premier League fans can see just how drastically the landscape of football in this country would be changed.

The study reveals the impact the economy would face if free movement of people was restricted, meaning clubs would be unable to buy players from EU member states.

By taking into account goals, points, squads, minutes played, wages and transfers, the study is able to calculate what the Premier League landscape from the past three season would look like without EU players.

After claiming their first Premier League title in 2016/17, Tottenham Hotspur would have failed in their defence as Liverpool would have edged them to victory last season.

Chelsea’s reliance on EU-based players over the past three seasons would have cost them

3

Chelsea’s reliance on EU-based players over the past three seasons would have cost them

This season, the race for the league would have been as tight as in real life as the Merseysiders would have finished on 94 points – level on points with City.

However, the Reds’ superior goal difference would have seen them pip the Citizens to the trophy for a second successive season.

The other major beneficiaries would have been Leicester City, who would have jumped from tenth to fifth in the division.

Making up the rest of the top 10 would be Everton in 6th on 64 points followed by West Ham (7th on 61 points), Crystal Palace (8th on 57 points), Watford (9th on 57 points and Manchester United (10th on 52 points).

EU RELIANT TEAMS

The study also shows how reliant Premier League teams are on EU players...

  1. Chelsea – 78% of matches played by EU players

  2. Wolves – 68% of matches played by EU players

  3. Huddersfield Town – 55% of matches played by EU players

  4. Arsenal – 49% of matches played by EU players

  5. Manchester United – 49% of matches played by EU players

The biggest losers from Brexit this season would be Wolverhampton Wanderers owing to their reliance on a strong Portuguese contingent – dropping from 7th to 18th.

Huddersfield and Fulham would also unfortunately still be locked firmly in a relegation dogfight.

Last season, Chelsea would have been relegated on 33 points, with Leicester City finishing 4th with 62 points.

Scroll down to see how the current Premier League table would look for the current season.
