Liverpool 4-0 Barcelona: Reds legend Phil Thompson says Champions League semi-final was ‘most astonishing match I’ve ever seen at Anfield’

Liverpool legends Phil Thompson and Gary McAllister believe the Reds’ amazing Champions League comeback against Barcelona was the greatest ever night under the lights at Anfield.

Three-time European Cup winner Thompson said it was ‘the most astonishing match’ he has ever seen, as Liverpool overcame incredible odds to beat Barca and seal their place in another final.

Few gave Jurgen Klopp’s men much hope, as they were tasked with fighting back from 3-0 down after their first-leg defeat in Spain.

But they stunned all their doubters with a thrilling performance against the Spanish champions, with Gini Wijnaldum and Divock Origi each scoring twice to seal a 4-0 victory – Liverpool progressing to the final 4-3 on aggregate.

‘The Miracle of Merseyside’ has been hailed as one of Liverpool’s greatest ever European wins, but Thompson believes it could be the greatest ever victory at Anfield.

“It was the most astonishing match I’ve seen at Anfield,” the former defender told talkSPORT host Jim White.

“Yes, we’ve had some wonderful ones, Olympiakos and Saint-Etienne and people will always remember them, but they were nothing compared to this one because of who they were actually playing against.

“This Barcelona side are just absolutely incredible, so to beat them after being 3-0 down…

“If we go on and win this, it will have been the greatest night Anfield had ever witnessed.”

Former midfielder McAllister was similarly stunned, saying Barcelona were left ‘in shock’ by the pressure they were put under by Klopp’s side and the atmosphere created by the buzzing supporters.

And the Scot believes Liverpool now deserve to lift the trophy after their semi-final heroics.

“Before the game, as much as my heart was saying Liverpool can do it, I just thought Barcelona would score,” he told talkSPORT.

“To watch the game unfold, it was just incredible, I couldn’t believe what I was watching.

“I just thought Barcelona were in shock. I don’t think they can cope with the pressure, the players and the fans. It was incredible, incredible watching it.

“Having been in the final last season and what they’ve done this season, with the way they’ve performed in the league as well, I think Liverpool deserve to the trophy.”

This is Barcelona's 12th UEFA Champions League semi-final - fewer only than Real Madrid (13). Defeat at the Camp Nou ended Liverpool's 19-match unbeaten run in all competitions (W14 D5), and was their first loss since a 2-1 FA Cup reverse at Wolves on 7 January. They had won ten games in a row before the first leg.
