New Tottenham stadium: Erik Thorstvedt ‘almost cried’ playing in £1billion ground and warns trophy drought could go on

Former Tottenham star Erik Thorstvedt ‘almost cried’ while playing in Spurs’ new stadium on Saturday.

Thorstvedt was part of a Spurs Legends team that lost 5-4 to an Inter XI in a test event at the redeveloped White Hart Lane.

Harry Kane and co will play their first competitive match at the 62,062-seater arena when Mauricio Pochettino̢۪s side host Crystal Palace on Wednesday.

Ex-Norway goalkeeper Thorstvedt, who played for Spurs between 1989 and 1996, told talkSPORT: â€Å“People have been waiting for such a long time for it to be finished, but once they move in against Palace, I think the wait will be forgotten.

â€Å“The problem is that maybe this stadium has become so expensive, that you might have to struggle with the debts for a few seasons.

â€Å“But I have to say the club as a whole has moved in a great direction in the last few seasons.

â€Å“The stadium is tremendous. This massive stand behind the goal, I went towards the goal before the match and I almost cried because all of these people were just applauding you, what a feeling that was.”

While there will likely be a celebratory feeling moving into their new home, Tottenham are in desperate need of a win.

They have lost four of their last five Premier League games, with the latest setback coming in a last-gasp 2-1 defeat to Liverpool on Sunday.

It has seen Manchester United and Chelsea, in fifth and sixth place, respectively, close the gap on Spurs to just one point.

Thorstvedt, 56, said: â€Å“They need to play the new stadium in, a bit like they did with Wembley.

â€Å“I’m not sure that’s going to be a massive advantage for Tottenham in the beginning, but I think after having this bad spell, they know what it takes now.

â€Å“This match against Palace has a serious undertone of ‘now we need to perform, it’s not just a big party’. It’s a really important match.”

Tottenham̢۪s 11-year wait for a trophy is set to extend unless they win the Champions League this season. Manchester City await in the quarter-finals of the competition next Tuesday.

A 2-1 triumph over Chelsea in the League Cup final in 2008 was the last time Spurs got their hands on silverware.

And Thorstvedt, who made 218 appearances for Tottenham and won the FA Cup in 1991, believes their trophy drought could go on for another two seasons.

He said: â€Å“There’s been a big discussion about this. It would be great if they can win a trophy because it’ll mean something for the fans.

â€Å“It will happen, but it’s so tough. Look at Manchester City and Liverpool, they are super teams. It’s very difficult to compete against those teams, but Tottenham have done it on a small budget.

â€Å“They’ve hardly spent any money at all on players. They will win something, but not necessarily next season or the season after, but within the next five years, I think it will happen because it’s been too long.

â€Å“Being in the quarter-finals of the Champions League, that’s got a value. That’s tremendous, it’s an incredible achievement and also being in the top four for a few seasons on the trot is absolutely brilliant.

â€Å“So, we need to have a good look and say ‘Tottenham are in better shape than they’ve been for a long, long time.’”

Real Madrid transfer news: How Zinedine Zidane’s side could line up featuring Paul Pogba, Christian Eriksen and Eden Hazard

This is rarely the case but right now, Real Madrid are a fragile club.

It’s been a dreadful season for Los Blancos by their exceptional standards as they lie twelve points adrift of LaLiga table-toppers Barcelona, they were knocked out of the Champions League after being taught a footballing lesson by Ajax and are also out of the Copa del Rey.

There have been many low points for Real Madrid this season

6

There have been many low points for Real Madrid this season

The reappointment of Zinedine Zidane as manager may give the club a lift but there is still a lot of work to do at the Bernabeu.

However, despite all the doom and gloom, Real Madrid continue to be linked with some of the top names in world football.

Chelsea star Eden Hazard appears to be holding out for a move to the Spanish capital while Manchester United’s Paul Pogba recently said playing for Real under Zidane would be a ‘dream’.

Meanwhile, Christian Eriksen’s transfer to Real is a ‘very strong possibility’, talkSPORT has been told.

So with this in mind, we at talkSPORT.com have looked at how they could line up should the world-class trio sign up?

Below you can see how Real Madrid could look with Pogba, Hazard and Eriksen in it.

Goalkeeper (Thibaut Courtois)

There have been question marks about Thibaut Courtois this season but given his contract lasts until 2024, he’s viewed as a long-term investment by the club.

If David de Gea ever becomes available then the Belgian might have something to worry about but for now Courtois’ position as the No.1 keeper looks reasonably safe.

Courtois hasn’t had it all his own way this season

6

Courtois hasn’t had it all his own way this season

Defence (Marcelo, Ramos, Varane, Carvajal)

Real have looked frail at the back on frequent occasions this season but they still have world-class defenders among their ranks.

And if anyone can galvanise them into getting their form back it’s Zidane, who is adored by everyone connected with the club having won three Champions League titles in his first stint as manager as well as a catalogue of trophies as a player for Los Blancos.

Reports have emerged that Raphael Varane is considering his future in Spain with Manchester United lurking but surely the France international wouldn’t turn his back on arguably the biggest club in the world and French football legend Zidane.

It would be a bug call for Varane to turn his back on Zidane

6

Midfield (Pogba, Casemiro, Eriksen)

Although Luka Modric won the Ballon d’Or this year, Real Madrid will be looking to find a long-term replacement for the midfielder who turns 34 this year.

And it looks like Pogba can see himself playing for the Spanish giants one day and European football expert Kevin Hatchard said on talkSPORT 2 that Eriksen could also be set for a move to Spain.

Manchester United should ‘GET RID’ of Paul Pogba, talkSPORT told

Bringing N’Golo Kante to Real would benefit Pogba hugely and also fill that Claude Makelele shaped hole that the club have lacked since 2004 but rumours that the Chelsea man wants to leave Stamford Bridge have gone quiet lately.

Pogba might have his eyes on the Bernabeu

6

Toni Kroos has been omitted from this XI as there is speculation the German is heading to Paris Saint-Germain in the summer.

Attack (Isco, Benzema, Hazard)

Hazard, who has revealed Zidane is someone he looks up to, moving to Real would give them an added freshness up front.

Hazard’s move to Madrid appears to be inevitable

6

Hazard’s move to Madrid appears to be inevitable

His preferred position is on the left of a front three and he would get many opportunities to score given Karim Benzema spent many seasons being the bridesmaid to ex-Real Madrid superstar Cristiano Ronaldo.

The spot on the right of the front three is up for grabs and although Gareth Bale started Real Madrid’s win over Celta Vigo last weekend, his future at the club is by no means secure and Isco was preferred by Zidane last season.

City ace Bernardo Silva: “It is an incredible feeling, to win all the domestic competitions for the first time is amazing.

“What a team this is, the fans were amazing, they pushed us all season. Now it is time to rest, to celebrate and next season we will try and win it all again.

“It doesn’t matter if we win 1-0 or 5-0 there is always space for improvement. Next season we will try to be even better and try to win even more titles.”

Watford boss Javi Gracia: “In this moment everyone is really sad but we knew before the game we had to play the perfect game. We started well and we created the best chance after 10 minutes with Roberto Pereyra but after that they dominated.

“It was very difficult for us to press which is what we were trying to do. They were better, congratulations to them and we will try again next time.

“Maybe scoring that early chance – you need to take any opportunity – but after that, they are really good, they found the spaces.

“Today and for all the season, we have to thank our fans, they are amazing. Sometimes you have to lose to win in the future and we will try to do it next time.”

“We have to improve, always you can improve. There is no sense to stay still.”

Man of the Match Kevin de Bruyne: “The first half was a little bit edgy but obviously with the 2-0 advantage, in the second half we played great, scored four goals and had more chances. What a great way to end the season.

City captain Vincent Kompany: “As soon as we scored the two goals it opened up the game for us and we were able to make more chances. It wasn't as easy as the score makes it look. But what a season, what a tremendous club.

“It started with the manager, he sets the standard at the start of the season and said we had to go back to back.

“It's the best team in the world for me. To set such a high standard for so long – not just for one year but two years running now. What a club, what a privilege.”
