Allan McGregor kick: Rangers goalkeeper branded ‘absolutely mental’ as red card v Hibs ruled him out of Old Firm clash

Allan McGregor kick: Rangers goalkeeper branded ‘absolutely mental’ as red card v Hibs ruled him out of Old Firm clash

Allan McGregor well and truly lost his head during Rangers’ clash with Hibernian.

The 37-year-old goalkeeper bizarrely aimed a karate kick at the back of Marc McNulty in the 89th minute of his side’s 1-0 win at Ibrox on Sunday – moments after brilliantly denying Florian Kamberi from close range.

It earned him a red card, ruling the veteran shot-stopper out of the final Old Firm derby of the season against Celtic next weekend.

Allan McGregor saw red after he bizarrely kicked out at Marc McNulty

Kris Boyd, his former Rangers team-mate, said of McGregor’s moment of madness: “It’s absolutely mental. I don’t know what he is thinking. It’s mental to even contemplate kicking out at someone.

“You can’t sit here and defend him. We have seen him have a couple of kick outs before. I’m lost for words.

“He is 36 now (sic) and not a silly little boy. It’s stupid.

“Rangers want to go and beat Celtic next week but now it looks like he’ll be suspended. It’s a crazy decision once again from him. He is a boy who lives on the edge and again it’s a moment of madness.”

Rangers boss Steven Gerrard refused to defend McGregor and admitted he was running out of ideas to tackle his squad’s discipline problems.

“I can’t defend it. He pulls a world-class save off to get us three important points and then he has a moment of madness where he loses control.

“It’s frustrating because we will miss our number-one keeper now and that will start with a very important game next week.

“It is frustrating, I should be going away thinking ‘we didn’t play well but it’s three good points, the run goes on’. But I’m not, I’m going away frustrated because I’m going to miss my keeper, who has been magnificent for me throughout the season.”

Steven Gerrard is unhappy with side’s discipline this season

2

Steven Gerrard is unhappy with side’s discipline this season

The red card was Rangers’ 12th of the season in all competitions. Alfredo Morelos’ first of five dismissals was later rescinded but both McGregor and Ryan Kent have had retrospective bans after red-card offences were missed on the day by match officials.

Gerrard – whose team triumphed courtesy of Jermain Defoe’s goal late in the first half – said: “I’m open to advice if anyone wants to give me any because I’m sure the players are sick of listening to me talking about discipline. It’s nine (league) red cards. That’s crazy.

“Our discipline problem is probably the reason why we are not talking about success and are talking about falling short, if you analyse it properly.

“This game is hard enough with 11. You need to be disciplined and keep your best players on the pitch.

“The players are not helping themselves but I’m running out of things to do to address it.

“I don’t want to be one of these managers who takes money out of the players’ pockets, they’ve got families, it’s not the type of man I am. But they are leaving me with no other option.”

Rangers had to see out a dramatic finale with Ross McCrorie in goal, having used all three substitutes.

McCrorie did not have any chance to show whether he shares any of the goalkeeping talent of his twin brother and Rangers team-mate Robby, who is on loan at Morton.

Swansea City 1-1 Derby County: Frank Lampard’s side held as race for final Championship play-off place goes to final match of season

Derby County missed out on a chance to all but seal a place in the Championship‘s top six as they were held by Swansea City.

They drew 1-1 at the Liberty Stadium on Wednesday and go into the final day needing a result against West Brom.

Richard Keogh’s first-half header looked like giving Derby a handsome advantage over seventh-placed Middlesbrough ahead of their final game at home to West Brom on Sunday.

But Wayne Routledge’s 66th-minute equaliser means Derby go into the last day of the regular season with a one-point lead over Middlesbrough while Bristol City, a point further back, also remain in the play-off equation.

In the end a draw was probably a fair result, with Derby the more polished outfit before the break and Swansea energised after it to protect an unbeaten home league record that stretches back to December.

Frank Lampard’s drew at Swansea

2

Frank Lampard’s drew at Swansea

But boss Lampard might rue the fact that Derby did not make their early edge count, especially as victory would have surely sewn up sixth place given their superior goal difference to Boro’s.

Both sides formed a guard of honour before kick-off for Alan Curtis, who is retiring from coaching at the end of the season after 40 years of service at Swansea.

Derby were briefly worried when the Swansea danger-man Daniel James tested Kelle Roos with a low shot at his near post.

But Derby soon established control and Tom Lawrence fired over before Bradley Johnson brought a fine point-blank save from Kristoffer Nordfeldt.

Swansea have struggled defending set-pieces all season and were punished again when Harry Wilson sent his corner to the far post.

Keogh took advantage of some lax marking to direct his header back across goal and in off the post.

James shot wide as Swansea stirred but Derby finished the half on top and twice came close to doubling their lead.

Cameron Carter-Vickers almost diverted the ball into his own net after some Mason Mount trickery, and Nordfeldt had to move his feet quickly to help Wilson’s audacious attempt over the crossbar.

Swansea made two changes at the break, as well as a tactical tweak as manager Graham Potter went with three at the back.

Declan John was immediately denied an equaliser by Roos’ outstretched foot and Jay Fulton, the other Swansea substitute, blazed over moments later.

Derby responded as Mount’s drive was deflected wide and Keogh headed over, but Swansea pressure was growing and the equaliser arrived when Oli McBurnie rose splendidly from a corner.

The Scot’s header was pushed on to a post by Roos, but the veteran Routledge was on hand to slide home his second goal in three games and boost his hopes of landing a new contract.

Keogh was injured in that incident to possibly put his place in the final game in jeopardy, but Derby kept their destiny firmly in their own hands.

Joao Felix: Manchester United transfer target nets another goal and celebrates with his ball boy brother

Manchester United transfer target Joao Felix isn’t showing any signs of complacency as his breakthrough season continues.

The Benfica wonderkid is racking up goals and assists at a break-neck pace, ignoring his new-found fame – and the fact the ladies appear to love him to as he refuses to acknowledge the nudes he gets sent.

Joao Felix strikes the ball against Vitoria de Setubal

The interest in Felix has ramped up over the last few days following his hat-trick in the Europa League quarter-finals against Eintracht Frankfurt, where he became the youngest ever to perform the feat.

And on Sunday the masterful 19-year-old thrilled those at the Estadio da Luz, including plenty of scouts, as he made two assists and then scored a brilliant third to help the Portuguese giants to a 4-2 victory over Vitoria de Setubal in the Primeira Division.

And he celebrated his own strike in style two, first of all giving us his version of Kylian Mbappe’s crossed arms before then embracing his 16-year-old brother Hugo – part of the Benfica academy, who happened to be standing behind the goal he scored, performing ball boy duties.

You can see the clip below.

Man United are one of a host of top European sides keen on Felix, with Juventus also interested, while Wolverhampton Wanderers are reportedly scouting the player heavily.

He would, though, cost any club a sizeable sum thanks to his €120million release clause, which Benfica wish to increase.

Meanwhile, club president Luis Filipe Vieira has said selling the prodigy right now isn’t essential.

Right now we are not interested in selling Joao Felix, and soon we will increase his release clause,” Vieira told Tuttosport.

“He is one of the best products to have emerged from Portuguese football since Cristiano Ronaldo.”
