Acts of simulation in football have, unfortunately, become institutionalised as teams seek any possible method to get ahead.
In particular, diving in the Premier League has become so common, officials within the organisation introduced retrospective bans for offenders.
Last season, Everton striker Oumar Niasse became the first player in Premier League history to be charged with ‘successful deception of a match official’ after an independent panel decided the forward had conned referee Anthony Taylor.
Taylor was again involved in more penalty controversy this season at the Emirates on Sunday when he awarded Arsenal a penalty after Nacho Monreal went down in the box.
However, the contact on the Spaniard appeared to be minimal at best and the accusations of diving began to reverberate around the Emirates and beyond.
This season has seen Mohamed Salah become embroiled in several ‘diving’ controversies, with fellow Liverpool teammate Fabinho also accused of play-acting by Mark Halsey.
